Laurelhurst and Seattle Children’s Hospital

Children’s Hospital Expansion

I do not think there is a parent or grandparent that would not want a hospital for children nearby in the event of an emergency. Not only does it serve as a great resource but it can not really hurt property values. Maybe…it adds traffic to the surface streets of Laurelhurst, WA but the hospital grounds cover many acres and that prevents bad construction choices by desperate developers and the City of Seattle approving inappropriate development in order to increase tax revenue.

The hospital is reported to have been founded by Anna Herr Clise as the seven-bed Children’s Orthopedic Hospital in 1907. In 1911 it moved to a cottage on Queen Anne Hill and 40 beds were dedicated to the facility by Herbert Gowen and Mark A. Matthews. In 1953, the hospital for children moved to a new campus in Laurelhurt just East of the University of Washington. Child Magazine ranked the hospital as #15 overall and #9 for cancer care in 2007!

Seattle Children’s Hospital is currently expanding the facility to more than 500 beds for sick children and this can not be a bad choice. As a father of two children and having been to the hospital myself for treatment it is increasingly important to have the hospital in our community. This is a major research facility and employs highly qualified doctors & nurses that can only increase property values in Laurelhurst because home buyers are looking to buy real estate close to work and home.

We love Laurelhurst Park and it is a wonderful center meeting place for Laurelhurst residents.

Laurelhurst Community Center Needs Your Support

Laurelhurst Community Center Needs Your Support

The Laurelhurst Community Center is a neighborhood hub and the very heart of Laurelhurst – the city is looking at options that could threaten the very heart of this neighborhood.  Apparently due to budget shortfalls, there is a need for the city to go beyond the furlough days that already exist – they consider the services provided by the Laurelhurst Community Center to be an overlap in geographic area.  As a result, the city is pondering closing it as a community center in the way that we know it now.

You can read an excerpt from the budget proposal here:

http://www.laurelhurstview.com/homes/laurelhurst-community-center-mentioned-in-city-budget-talk/

You can share YOUR ideas to make Seattle better including keeping the Laurelhurst Community Center open as we hope it will be here:  http://seattlecitycouncil.ideascale.com/a/ideafactory.do?id=9994&mode=recent&discussionFilter=byids&discussionID=24356

You can see that some of your neighbors already have taken the opportunity to sound off about the possibility of changes to The Laurelhurst Community Center. Please also take the time to let us know what you think by leaving a comment.

What do you think?

Why not fill out this form and let the city council know what a horrendous idea this is?  Here is the link for that, too.
